Know Your Child

Since 2008, the Know Your Child system has been used to help thousands of parents gain invaluable insight into their child’s needs.  Toilet training has been the initial focus, being an important and necessary skill that a child needs to accomplish in their early years of development.  Interestingly, the simple act of toilet training has revealed a critical need for families whereby parents are struggling to help their child learn this new and unavoidable task.  Know Your Child has been the solution to help parents overcome the ‘battle of wills’ like the common, and extremely stressful, Poo Challenge.  With a dedicated approach to their child’s needs, parents can move quickly through the process, working in their child’s strengths rather than operating in their weaknesses.

Importantly, the focus of Know Your Child is the early years of development.  This is particularly beneficial when communication and social skills are just developing.  In addition, a child at two or three years of age, cannot explain why they are feelign overwhelmed or out of control.  The act of potentially behaving badly or having a meltdown, is their way of telling us, “Can you help me?”  However, it is the parent that needs to understand ‘why’, in order to help their child learn positive social and emotional behaviours.

What is Know Your Child?

Know Your Child is a system to help parents and early years educators understand their children at the crucial age of development, birth to five years.  Through a foundational understanding of a child’s temperment, we can apply a dedicated approach to their specific needs.  In combination with positive psychology and wellbeing strategies, it provides a whole-child approach to raising a child.  Additionally, we take the approach, “It takes a village to raise a child”.  Research has shown that this age is critical and sets the trajectory for the rest of their life.  While nothing is guaranteed, it is so much more difficult to “fix” a problem once it is created.  This is where the goal of prevention makes more sense, rather than trying to develop the cure.  A bad habit is not knowing what to do the first time and repeating it.  We don’t wake up one morning and decide, I am going to create a behaviourial problem with my three year old today.  I will aim for tantrum each time I want him to do something, so that it will end in tears and screaming…. No, we don’t do this.  It is often in the details that are missing and moreso, the lack of understanding what we need to do to prevent this in the first place.  How tragic missing out on the harmony in the household, simply because we didn’t know.  Know Your Child fills in these critical gaps. It provides simple details for parents and early childhood educators to know how to work with a strong-willed child that is trying to assert their authority.  Or maybe the child that is too fearful to join in with the new activity.

WELL-BEING is the focus of Know Your Child to help families THRIVE.
